It takes a certain kind of person to elope on the Oregon coast in March. The sky can shift from brilliant sun to torrential rain in minutes, and checking the weather will tell you nothing. You have to let go of all expectations, pack an umbrella (or 5) and hope for the best. If anyone was made for this it was Christian and Caitlin. I have never met two people so calm and unworried on their wedding day, from hiding in a very smelly public bathroom to make a first look work to sliding down a muddy hill to the perfect spot for vows, they were just completely content.
It is no secret that I love the flexibility and easy charm of elopements. Time seems meaningless, the world feels huge and tiny at once, and almost always the lack of crowds and detailed timelines is the perfect recipe for vulnerability. Christian’s eyes welled up with tears as Caitlin read him her vows from a small leather notebook and the ocean broke on the rocks below. Despite the downpour I’d driven through on my way to coast, we had not a single drop of rain as they laughed and kissed and paused many times to just look out over the epic stretch of Cannon Beach below. The perfect spring elopement.
