There is just something about seeing a city from above the street level, to be in it but also separated from it. It makes you feel alive.
In a pandemic you have to be a little creative about where you take photos to keep everyone safe, and it turns out that the empty top floor of a parking garage is perfect! Lots of room to run, no one to bother, the sky seemingly just out of reach, what more could you want? It was such a joy to see Portland from this vantage point, with its collection of old and new buildings scattered together. Though the forecast had called for clouds and rain all day, the sun burst out right on cue as if to applaud us for finally leaving the house. It touched the sharp lines of city and concrete so softly.
I haven’t been doing city photo sessions nearly enough lately, and wow do I love how patient and sweet Dean and Cynthia were when I made them run all over or lie down in empty parking spaces as if that was a perfectly normal thing to do. As you can see, it was worth it. This was my second time shooting these two and somehow they always look straight off a romance novel cover, without me even doing anything.
