Alex was the very first person I met in my first year playing hockey in Montreal. I was admittedly nervous, knew no one on the team or even which locker room I was supposed to go to, but I ran into Alex while standing awkwardly by the door to the arena and he’s been one of my favorite teammates ever since. When his girlfriend Sarah joined the team a year later, it was even better! I was finally not the only girl on the bench, and I had someone else who wanted to play defense so I never had to. An all around win win.
When I got an email asking if I would be interested in shooting their wedding day, I literally dropped my phone and jumped up and down in excitement. Alex and Sarah love so many of the things I love, they play hockey, adore their cat, and their apartment is decorated with comics and Legend of Zelda posters. They said they were most interested in photos of the real emotions and moments of the day, which of course is exactly what I’m interested in capturing when I shoot. It was a dream come true.
The day of their wedding it rained and rained. Because they were getting married at an orchard, the ground around the buildings turned to mud and the drops pounded down on the roof of the solarium where they said their vows. But every single person there was just beaming with smiles the entire day and it hardly seemed to matter if the weather wasn’t the best. Everyone helped ferry each other from place to place with umbrellas and Alex’s groomsmen all helped brush the rain from his hair and suit before Sarah came down the aisle. The love that filled that orchard on a cold September evening was palpable. I cried behind my camera while Alex told Sarah about how he’d first fallen in love with her. What a beautiful day.
Plus, their wedding cake had a giant dragon on it. Best wedding ever?
